New Bon Jovi and Europe album review
Hope you all had a great christmas!
Got a couple of albums at christmas that i thought id give you my thoughts on.
first of is the new Bon Jovis album "The Circle"
Lost Highway was a very different album compared to the other typical Bon Jovi album. It even got an award at a country music festival if im not misstaken. I thought it was pretty good despite the new direction. The Circle are said to be more of a step back to the rock stuff. Lets find out!
1 We Wern't Born to Follow
The opening track also was the first single of the album. It might not become an all time classic but it sure does the job. It really is a symbol for the new more modern and mature sound that they have adopted the last 10 years but still keeping the rock element there. really like the backing vocals part in the chorus.
2 When We Were Beautiful
Would not be surprised if i was to see Bono on the writing credits (He is'nt) Very U2 inspired to say the least. Not something that will play in my ears over and over again but totally okay song.
3 Work For the Working Man
You can't help to relate the opening bass part with Livin' On A Prayer. Goes in the same melody as Richies voice box part on there most well known song. The rest is another entity though. It sounds a bit dark in contrast to all the cheerfull songs they did in the past. Also okay but not so much more.
4 Superman Tonight
Turns up the mood a little bit but a little to "pop oriented" to fall in my taste. Not gonna throw myself over the "next button" when i hear it but wont be looking for it either.
5 Bullet
Here comes a little more rocky song. The druming part really reminds me of the 1992 title track Keep The Faith. Some other elements reminding of that song to. Still its to much mainstream rock/pop to be great.
6 Thorn in My Side
Another semi rock song caught in the mainstream sound. Although i haft to say its better then the previous couple of songs. Better but still not working.
7 Live Before You Die
Guess we can say this is the first proper ballad on the album. Quite a few memorable ballads have come from this band through the years and they often make them very good. This is no exception but it will never get up there with likes of Bed Of Roses and Always. Clearly one of the better songs so far on the album.
8 Brokenpromiseland
Oh he misspelled there you might think but no that is how the title is listed for some reason. That is about the only thing worth taking note of as its another soft song that seem to be the back bone of this album.
9 Love's the Only Rule
The only thing even remotely rock familiar is a half decent guitar solo at best. You wont regret skipping thisone.
10 Fast Cars
Yeah here is a title with something manly and promising a harder rock sound then anything on the album. Well one can't have more wrong then that. Probably the most non rock song i have ever heard by a supposed rock band.
11 Happy Now
Things do get somewhat better but still not close to being good enough.
12 Learn to Love
Perhaps not what i would call a ballad but something in that direction. It does sound better then most songs on the album and i guess this one also fall in the okay category and makes the ending a bit better atleast.
With the massive fan base the band have i really dont see why they need to spit out such a mainstream album, they would sell alot of records if they did a more rock oriented album to. I can understand a new band trying to score some extra points by doing something a wide amount of people enjoy but when it comes to one of the biggest bands of its era they have the possibility to take more risks and do something more memorable rather then some mainstream crap that will be forgotten very soon. I understand that they arent 20 anymore and does the same kind of songs as they did with Slippery When Wet and New Jersey but still. The more mature sound of the more recent albums like Crush and Have A Nice Day where still good IMO. More mainstream yes but still rock.
Alot of people have dissmissed those albums because of the way it went from the old classic stuff. Myself i had no problem with those albums but im afraid i haft to take a step away from this one with the same reasons as many did on the other albums the last 10 years. This is pushing it way to much out of controll. Lost Highway was alot better then this and i would have preferd that sound alot more then i do with this.
I haft to say that the first three songs are the only ones worth having a listen to and the only ones worth having on a good Bon Jovi album. Unfortunately the album is'nt very good. I have always said that Bon Jovi is a band that don't do bad songs in general. Untill now the Bounce album was the exception but now there is two of them. The band almost seem tired and there is no riffs or blistering solos from Richie that you will remember. Jon doesent give anything either really. That is strange as he is one of the few rock vocalists that still have a voice that is'nt to far from the one there "big days". Even though i dont really like the Bounce album atleast they seemed to have tried and do something great, this is just an effortless excuse to go out on tour.
Listening to alot of there shows from recent years i haft to say that they have sounded really great with an awsome setlist from there whole career showing how they have kept producing great material for over 25 years. This however just is'nt good enough at any level. The only really good song is the opening track that i really like. Maybe they are to comfortable with what they do these days as to the times when they sat in there parents basements in the mid 80s and worked on slippery when wet.
Still gonna get all there stuff as always but they better do better then this to keep the "real fans" instead of just to keeping the airtime on the radio...
Bon Jovi Lossless
Bon Jovi Lossy

And then there is Europe with Last Look At Eden. Just like Bon Jovi they went through to a more mature sound when they did the reunion in 2004. This is the third album that i have high hopes for. Europe might not be a the band that can ride on that single track as they did when they made it big. They have been sounding very exciting since the reunion and the live shows have been really great. As much as The Final Countdown really made way for them the song also put a curse on them being marked with the one hit wonder stamp by many people not to familiar with there work other then that one song. Rock The Night, Cherokee, Superstitious and many more are great songs people often forget.
So lets see how they did this time.

1 Prelude
No big fan of these instrumental intros so not gonna bother to write anymore about it
2 Last Look at Eden
So the opening track. The prelude works as an intro to the this track taking off where the first track left. As the Bon Jovi album it starts out good. Maybe not as good as the opening track on The Circle but still something you sure can enjoy. If you think all this band ever produce is childish hair metal music check this out. Europe have also since the reunion grown up alot more compared to the 80s and this really shows it.
3 Gonna Get Ready
This is exactly what i miss with the Bon Jovi album. A riff you remember. Maybe not the best you ever heard but still something to make the song special from all others. A great song in general.
4 Catch That Plane
Another good song. Not quite as hard as the other tracks so far. Lets find out if they can manage to keep this form on through the whole album.
5 New Love in Town
So comes the first ballad. I think these kind of ballads have been typical for the 2000s with alot of backing vocals in the chorus. Maybe not a "Carrie" but its still something very good. A bit short for a ballad but it works.
6 The Beast
Unlike "Fast Cars" on the Bon Jovi album this live up to its name pretty good. If you are used to the 80s Europe this will sound a bit strange. It really shows why the band have been classed as a hard rock band. Not as strong song as the rest of the album but the tracks are still all good.
7 Mojito Girl
Another heavy song. I guess its okay but its by far the weakest track so far. Has its moments but no favorite.
8 No Stone Unturned
This one turns up the quality just a little bit. Don't like that weird sound from the keyboard during the solo but one can't get it all. Pretty good overall
9 Only Young Twice
Its been in the background on a coupe of songs and its here again. They have thrown in some symphony orchestra played parts which is nice. Another good track.
10 U Devil U
Not to fond of the intro and not the rest of the song either. Not bad but not so good either but we haft to remmeber that the songs back here usally drops in quality.
11 Run with the Angels
This is a bit better but still not to good. Chorus is pretty good but the others one can skip.
12 In My Time
To finnish things of we get a ballad. A nice little song you can relax to. Somehow it has a very small part of Gary Mores Still Got The Blues over it at some places.
So how did they do then? I haft to say they did exellent! Its everything the Bon Jovi album is'nt. This is exciting and they really seem to have put down some work in it. Joey Tempest might not pull out the performance of a lifetime but John Norum on the other hand does a very good job along with the other musicians. They have taken a little more risk going with a more defined sound and not just some flat mainstream thing. Sure you can hear its made in the 2000s but they still keep the rock element very good.
The opening track on The Circle are better then all the stuff on Last Look At Eden but the rest of the Europe album completely destroys The Circle. For the moment Europe have worked themselfs up to and passed Bon Jovi with this album. Europe really dare to take it further out there and not just hook on the trends just like that. With an album like this i really hope they stay together for many more years and prduce more albums. Europe really are one of those bands that i have been more and more impressed with in recent years.
Keep it up!
